Education Through Bars

To aid a prisoner in obtaining a graduate degree from TSI, they must have the following requirements:

Proof of a Bachelors degree
A Sponsor (someone that will facilitate all communication between the prisoner and TSI)
A Support Network of at least 5 adults (not including TSI)
Money to cover the cost of all educational material including books
Resources to complete all course assigments
A commitment to alternatives to violence and conflict transformation
A full two year commitment
To have a visitor’s meeting at your prison with their sponsor, a few members of their support network, and a State-Wide Education Through Bars Coordinator

Education Through Bars, a project of the Transformative Studies Institute (TSI), is a special initiative of the TSI graduate school that reaches through the bars of U.S. adult state and federal correctional facilities to provide free education to prisoners. ETB believes in the old correctional principle that people can change through education. ETB hopes to decrease recidivism and make communities safer by providing education to prisoners who, when released, will have a greater opportunity for success through legal means.
